Dolphins Waive Dion Jordan After Failed Physical

Mar 31, 2017 8:56 PM

The Miami Dolphins waived former 2013 first-round pick Dion Jordan on Friday after he failed a physical.

The move will save the Dolphins $4.225 million in salary for 2017.

The Dolphins moved up from No. 12 to No. 3 four years ago to select Jordan out of Oregon.

Jordan had just three career sacks and multiple NFL suspensions for violating the league's substance abuse policy. He hasn't played in a game since the 2014 season.

The Dolphins kept Jordan under contract the past two years because of his potential.

Veganism Used As Latest Excuse Why Colin Kaepernick Remains Unsigned

Mar 31, 2017 11:33 AM

The latest reason why NFL teams may be reluctant to sign Colin Kaepernick is his vegan diet and his general commitment to the game.

Tom Brady has been celebrated for his diet, which is primarily plant based.

Kaepernick remains unsigned, which has led many to speculate his political beliefs have caused the NFL to blackball him.

Raiders Plan To Discuss Extension With Derek Carr After Draft

Mar 31, 2017 8:34 AM

Derek Carr will soon enter the final year of his contract, but there is little chance he becomes a free agent.

The Oakland Raiders plan to work out a contract extension with their quarterback this offseason. Both sides are motivated to get a done deal and Reggie McKenzie indicated that talks should increase later this spring.

"He knows what we're trying to do in free agency, and he's never saying, 'I need to know now. It's not like that," McKenzie said. "More likely, the serious talks will happen after the (NFL) draft. The communication has been ongoing, just talking about the philosophy of a contract and the thought process around it. Hopefully when the serious talks start going, then it's going to be easier."

Jameis Winston Working Out With Adrian Peterson

Mar 31, 2017 8:34 AM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers haven't chased Adrian Peterson in free agency, but Dirk Koetter was interested to hear that Jameis Winston spent Thursday working out with the running back.

Winston's personal quarterback coach, George Whitfield, posted a photo on Instagram of himself with Peterson, Winston and Winston's strength and conditioning coach Tim Grover in Houston.

Whitfield also posted a photo of himself with Winston, Peterson, DeSean Jackson and Mike Evans after Tuesday night's Houston Rockets game.

"I've seen Adrian Peterson many times -- one of the best running backs to ever play," Koetter said. Then, after a long pause, he added, "I'm anxious to talk to Jameis and ask him about how his workouts went."

Peterson, 32, became an unrestricted free agent March 9 when the Minnesota Vikings opted not to pick up the option on his contract, which would have paid him $18 million for 2017.

Colin Kaepernick Remaining Unsigned This Late Is Historical Anomaly

Mar 29, 2017 4:58 PM

Since 1966, only one under-30 quarterback has had as good a year as Colin Kaepernick’s 2016 has gone unsigned the next year.

Due to Kaepernick's protest of the national anthem last season, there have been questions as to whether that's the reason teams have been avoiding him.

It’s difficult to find a recent free agent quarterback who played at Kaepernick’s level and lasted so long on the market the next offseason. Matt Leinart (2012) and Kyle Orton (2014) signed nearly 50 days into their free agency, but neither had played much the year before. Michael Vick wasn’t signed for 169 days in 2015, but he was also older and coming off a season (39.4 QBR) far worse than Kaepernick’s 2016.

Beyond the political component of Kaepernick's situation, there is an unusual factor this offseason in that Tony Romo's status remains uncertain.

Chris Long Signs One-Year Deal With Eagles

Mar 28, 2017 12:41 PM

Chris Long has signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Long announced before the start of free agency that he wouldn't be returning to the New England Patriots.

Long totaled 35 tackles and four sacks in the regular season. In Super Bowl LI, he made the most of his 15 defensive snaps played, drawing a critical holding penalty that helped push the Falcons out of field goal range when they had been in position to kick a field goal late and possibly increase their lead to 11 points.

Bengals Release Rey Maualuga

Mar 26, 2017 3:09 PM

The Cincinnati Bengals have released veteran linebacker Rey Maualuga.

Maualuga, 30, was entering the last season of his contract and was due $3.6 million in salary and bonuses.

"Rey has been a tough and productive player for us, and a fine teammate, and this is a difficult decision," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said in a statement. "It's one of several we have made to transition to a younger group at linebacker as we continue to shape our 2017 roster."

Maualuga was the Bengals' second-round draft pick in 2009 and has been a longtime fixture in the middle for Cincinnati, starting 104 regular-season games there during his eight-year tenure.
